PDx homes school guide & directory
I have structured this schools section to include information on
all the schools, colleges and universities in the greater Portland
area (Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas County) and state, including
private education resources, up to date news and links to national
sites.
History
Oregon's public school system was created in 1849. The Oregon Constitution gives
the legislature primary responsibility for creating a public school system
and provides for an elected state superintendent of public instruction. In
1951, the legislature established the State Board of Education, which is responsible
for establishing a policy for administering and operating public elementary,
secondary schools and community colleges.
The Department of Education serves 198 school districts which educate
over 500,000 elementary and secondary students. The graph below shows
the Average Oregon SAT results compared nationally.

French American
International School
FAIS Mission Statement: The French American International School strives
to cultivate a student’s intellect and character, offering strong academic programs
in French, in English, in Spanish and in German in an environment that daily
promotes an understanding of different cultures.
The goal of FAIS is to employ the rich resources of an internationally recognized
curriculum in order to help each student realize his or her full potential.
The excellent teaching staff works to stimulate intellectual curiosity, encourage
independent thinking, and foster individual responsibility. Parents choose
the school for the academically rigorous curriculum and for the superb language
immersion program. FAIS students graduate with an appreciation of cultural
differences and the life-long skills necessary to succeed in an increasingly
global society.

the students' intellect. Students learn how to function in a third or second
language, take subjects in the Language Arts & Social

growing needs. Most of OHSU's activities are housed on its 116-acre Marquam
Hill Campus in southwest Portland and the 300-acre West Campus in Hillsboro.
With its 11,000 employees, OHSU is Portland's largest corporate employer
and the state's fourth largest. The majority of its billion-dollar budget
is earned from clinical activities, grants, contracts and gifts. Less than
five percent of the university's budget comes from state support. OHSU generates
more than 41,000 jobs and fuels more than $2 billion in regional economic
activity annually.
All of OHSU's schools, hospitals and clinics have received the highest accreditation

“As Oregon's flagship public university, it boasts the state's most comprehensive
library, highest enrollment, and largest endowment. Recently named a "rising
star" among public universities, the UO offers exceptional technological
support for students and professors. It was also rated the nation's "Most
Wired" public university and has been judged a "Best Buy" in
higher education for the past five years.
The UO's academic reputation is highlighted by its stature as Oregon's only
member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, one of just
34 public universities in the United States so honored. Membership in this
select group signifies preeminence in graduate and professional education
and basic research. The quality of its faculty has been ranked 15th nationally
among all U.S. public universities, and the UO's emphasis on top-quality
teaching is highlighted by innovative new programs, such as the Oregon Model
of small-class undergraduate education.
Located in the southern Willamette Valley city of Eugene, close to beaches,
mountains, lakes and forests, the 280-acre main UO campus consists of 84
major buildings surrounded by an arboretum of more than 3,000 specimens of
trees. Sunset magazine ranked Eugene one of the West's five best college
towns.
The combination of strong academic programs, beautiful setting and moderate
size draws an annual enrollment of about 20,000, including international
students from more than 80 countries.
In addition to a comprehensive College of Arts and Sciences, which includes
the Clark Honors College, the university is composed of a graduate school
and six professional schools in architecture and allied arts, business, education,
journalism and communication, law and music. Degrees and certificates are
offered in more than 110 academic majors and minors. The university is the
only institution in the state offering doctoral degrees in the arts and humanities
and the social sciences, and it places a strong emphasis on research programs
in the most advanced areas of basic science.
Included among the UO's institutes and research centers are the Oregon Humanities
Center, the Institute on Violence and Destructive Behavior, the Center on
Human Development, the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology at Charleston on
the southern Oregon coast, and the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies.
Internationally recognized institutes in molecular biology, neuroscience,
materials science and chemical physics foster interdisciplinary research
at the vanguard of science.”

INDEPENDENT
COLLEGES AND INSTITUTIONS
Oregon's private colleges and universities make up 30 percent of the state's
four-year student body.
Ever since 1842 when Willamette University was founded, Oregonians have been
developing high-quality independent colleges and universities supported by
students, families and donors rather than by government funding.
These institutions provide specialized two- and four-year professional and
technical training, and a wide range of graduate studies.
Enrolling almost 30,000 students and employing over 5,000 Oregonians, these
institutions add a combined annual budget of more than ½ billion dollars
to the state's economy. They also attract an additional 11,000 out-of-state
students, making Oregon a net importer of high-quality college students.
